  • DNC's first day a whirlwind

    Attending day one of the Democratic National Convention in Denver was like going to a party, a game and an industry trade show simultaneously. From a logistical standpoint, the enormous production came off nearly seamlessly.

    The shuttle bus, the security, the sound system, the snack bars, the people-watching, organization, professionalism of the volunteers, general accessibility and the inspiring speeches by famous political figures made the evening go by entertainingly.

    If the rest of the days go off as well, it will be a big win for Denver and Colorado.

  • Jeffco schools to seek tax increase, bond issue

    The Jefferson County school board voted unanimously Aug. 21 to ask voters for a 4.4-mill increase in property taxes and a $350 million bond issue in the Nov. 4 election to pay for more teachers, upkeep, buildings and technology upgrades.

    The mill levy is expected to cost taxpayers an extra $2.92 a month per $100,000 of assessed valuation. The bond issue is to replace the level of borrowing that is in already in place as that is paid off, and it will not result in a tax increase.

    The proposal could be a tough sell in view of the declining economic climate.

  • Walgreens officially opens

    Friday morning's opening of Evergreen's Walgreens was quite eventful for the store's first customers.

    Kristi Leinen of Evergreen had the distinction of being the first shopper. She dashed into the store about 7:40 a.m. — 20 minutes before the store's scheduled opening time — to grab school supplies for her children.

  • Political newcomer challenging DA Storey

    When Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey announced in January that he’d be seeking a second term, there was no word on whom the Democrats might run against him.

    Eight months later — and just three months before the November election — Storey finally has an opponent.

    Vicky Peters, a Lakewood Democrat coming off a 20-year career as an environmental attorney in the Colorado attorney general's office, is Storey's challenger.

    The Cougars lost three seniors but reload with varsity veterans Ryan Hooks and Bryan Schlichter. And that is key to Kuzava — the Cougars reload rather than rebuild.

  • Fine Arts Festival still going strong in Heritage Grove

    Since its humble beginnings in 1966, the Evergreen Artists Association Fine Arts Festival has rivaled some of the finest art shows in the country. And some say it’s even better than most, given its prime location.

    The festival’s art is displayed among the old-growth Ponderosa pines of Heritage Grove near the Hiwan Homestead Museum. What better way to peruse the work of more than 100 artists than on a sunny mountain afternoon under the shade of these gentle giants.
