  • Rosier takes heat over slash disposal

    Slash disposal continues to be a hot issue for mountain residents — figuratively and literally — and it doesn’t look like the problem will be solved any time soon.

    The Conifer Area Council’s public affairs committee hosted County Commissioner Donald Rosier on April 29 at Los 3 Garcias Restaurant in Aspen Park. Rosier was invited to speak on a number of topics: slash disposal, the county’s plans for legalized marijuana, and other goings-on in Jeffco.

  • Evergreen puts on a hitting clinic

    The Evergreen Cougars put on a hitting clinic May 4 against rival Conifer. And every time the Lobos answered, Evergreen answered right back.
    The home-standing Cougars scored four runs or more in four consecutive innings, capping the game with a Joe Danni game-ending RBI single in the fifth inning for a 17-7 win. And it’s wasn’t just one individual — it was a collective effort for the Cougars, as all nine guys contributed in some form or another.

  • EHS knocks on the door, but can’t push it in

    DENVER — It was a recurring theme for the Evergreen Lady Cougars. In a Region 1 girls tennis tournament that featured the likes of host Colorado Academy, Valor Christian and Alexander Dawson, Evergreen was knocking on the door time and again to qualify someone for this week’s 4A state tournament in Pueblo. But it didn’t quite happen.

  • Bounce doesn’t go EHS’ way

    LAKEWOOD — No, Evergreen didn’t win the 4A Jeffco League girls soccer championship on May 3 at Lakewood Memorial Field. That honor was bestowed on preseason favorite Green Mountain, thanks to a Jenn Brunsdon rebounded goal in the 68th minute for a 1-0 victory.
    But while Evergreen was denied a league title, it may have gained something even more important — the confidence to play the state’s best with the 4A playoffs on the horizon.

  • Tenney cards 81, punches ticket to state

    LAKEWOOD — Evergreen’s Madison Tenney’s golf ball went swimming twice in the May 6 Class 4A Metro West Regional golf meet at Fox Hollow Golf Club. Had that not happened, she might have well finished fifth among the tournaments 76 contestants.

  • Sound decisions on memorial, recall

    It’s been a pretty good couple of weeks for decisions by and about Evergreen’s primary governmental entities. The ill-advised attempt to recall the board of directors of the Evergreen Fire Protection District was snuffed out by a landslide vote, and the Evergreen Park and Recreation District board kept the faith with the American Legion and other supporters of the Buchanan Park veterans memorial by approving a statue to complete the memorial.

  • Hummingbird feeders need meticulous care

    Once more we have snow in May. This is a bit disturbing because we have just had some fine spring weather in April, and this seems like we are going backward. We don’t really want to see winter return, but it is not unusual. All of the ice was off Evergreen Lake by April 30.

  • Life lesson is all it’s cracked up to be

    Bergen Meadow kindergartners learned about biology and life on a farm by watching eggs hatch into tiny chicks for the past few weeks.

    The first chick pecked its way out of its egg on April 29, and the children were enthralled with the sight of new life.

    Hatching eggs is an annual event at Bergen Meadow, and older students get excited as they relive the time when the eggs hatched in their kindergarten classrooms.

    Peggy Miller, the school’s principal, even donned a chicken hat that morning to signal the event.

  • Boggs tries to block filming at school board meeting

    Jeffco schools Superintendent Cindy Stevenson summoned security at last Thursday’s board meeting when school board member Laura Boggs tried to prevent a district employee from recording video of a speaker.

    Broomfield resident Kelly Scott was addressing the board about his desire for schools to get back to Judeo-Christian roots and teachings when Boggs stood and blocked the iPad camera of communications manager Marlene Desmond.
