  • Cougars top Jaguars, win streak now at eight

    The scene was set for an epic Class 4A Jefferson County League boys basketball battle between Evergreen and D’Evelyn on Feb. 20. The props were in place, the actors were prepared and the anticipation was palpable.

    In a game that featured two evenly matched teams that were equal in league record and both riding high on win streaks, everything was in place for a fight to the finish.

  • Evergreen resident arrested on securities fraud charges

    Evergreen resident Kenneth G. Berry, 65, has been charged with 11 counts of securities fraud in Colorado in connection with selling shares of stock in a reportedly non-existent company called Biotech Information Systems Inc.

    Berry’s wife, Anne Wakeford Berry, is listed as a co-defendant in the case.

    Ken Berry is alleged to have illegally obtained money from eight people, each of whom invested about $10,000 between Nov. 17, 2006, and May 15, 2008, according to the complaint filed Feb. 18 in Jefferson County District Court.

  • Concerned citizens turn out for town hall meeting

    An informal town hall meeting came together in the Evergreen Middle School cafetorium at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in front of a lively crowd of about 60 people.

    Participants included freshman state Rep. Cheri Gerou of Evergreen and state Sen. Dan Gibbs of Silverthorne. Topics ranged from an update on the pine bark beetle to the latest transportation legislation just passed in the state Senate.

  • HOA survey finds opposition to Buchanan Park plans

    Most residents of the subdivision close to Buchanan Park are opposed to developing the park with recreational buildings and would prefer to see the land left in its natural state.

    People who live nearby are worried about attracting traffic, strangers, musical events, festivals, lights and noise to the relatively peaceful island between busy Evergreen and Bergen parkways.

    At least that seems to the be general consensus of neighborhood opinion, based on an informal private opinion survey spearheaded by Cindy Brown, president of The Trails at Hiwan homeowner association.

  • Rustic Point furniture boasts a great 2008

    Rustic Point furniture and gift store had a great 2008 and is expecting 2009 to go just as well.

    “We had a great year,” said owner Sara MacBean of the store, which is in the HONKA building in the El Rancho Town Center. “Truly, I think a large part is that we had our first full year in this location.” The store had been located on Meadow Drive.

    MacBean says the store has created a following of customers, who stop in to see the furniture, gift items and home accessories. She said people are always coming in to see what’s new.

    Although the title “CEO” contains only three letters, it has become a four-letter word. Almost all businesses have one, but not all deserve the scorn and disrespect the title has taken on lately. As with most things, the deeds of the very worst get a lot of publicity and tend to contaminate many innocent leaders who share the title, but not the dastardly deeds.

  • I-70 lane to close at Floyd Hill

    The Colorado Department of Transportation will close one lane of eastbound Interstate 70 on Tuesday, Feb. 24, from 4 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    The closure will start from the bottom of Floyd Hill and continue to the top, allowing crews to clean culverts, drains, signs and delineators.

    The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph, and minor traffic delays are expected.

  • Town hall meeting planned Thursday

    An Evergreen Town Hall meeting will be held Thursday, Feb. 19, at Evergreen Middle School from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

    State Rep. Cheri Gerou and state Sen. Dan Gibbs will be on hand to discuss legislative issues with their constituents. Also, the concept of a regular town hall gathering to address local issues will be discussed.

  • Jeffco commissioners ax internal audit department

    The Jefferson County commissioners eliminated the county’s internal audit department on Feb. 17, citing the need “to reduce administrative overhead costs” and saying the department’s functions were duplicative.

    But the now-former internal auditor said that’s not the reason at all.

    Susan Johnson, who lost her job along with her assistant, says it’s all about accountability.

  • Cougars fire on all cylinders, rout Lobos

    EVERGREEN — It probably won’t be the plot of the next X-Files movie, but Scott Haebe knows he saw something strange this season. And it happened again Feb. 11.

    “I have no answers for this,” the longtime Evergreen boys coach said after the Cougars trounced their rival Conifer Lobos. “We’ve played our two best games of the year against them. That’s unusual.”
