  • Parochial approach not helping our young players

    Wanting to maintain a strong local identity in our kids’ soccer programs is admirable but quaint and unrealistic. The Stingers does a fine job of coaching and training up until the age of 12, but it desperately needs to merge with a bigger club with greater resources to produce more of the potentially outstanding players who will move on to Evergreen High, Mullen, Colorado Academy or Conifer varsity teams.

  • Citizen budgeters recommend county finance $60 million in projects

    Jeffco’s Citizen Budget Review Panel will formally recommend that the county spend $5 million annually for the next 20 years to finance more than $60 million in construction and equipment needs.

    The panel, made up of county residents, has been meeting since late February to help officials prioritize spending on construction and equipment. Over the last few months, the group has met with various county departments to hear about the most pressing needs and has grappled with how to generate funds to finance the projects that county officials say are desperately needed.

  • Storey, McCasky clash over term limits

    An effort by Jeffco District Attorney Scott Storey to extend term limits for his office might be over before the question even goes to voters.

    Storey, who began his second term in January, has been trying to get support to extend limits for his and the sheriff's office to three terms, or 12 consecutive years. Current law allows for two consecutive terms, or eight years, for all Jefferson County elected officials.

  • County fears late fees, increase might torque vehicle owners

    Jeffco officials are preparing for the worst when it comes to how county residents might react to looming increases in vehicle registration fees and mandatory late fees for those who fail to register vehicles on time.

    The county will spend $55,000 hiring off-duty police officers to provide security at three of its five motor vehicle offices, including South Jeffco's office at 6004 S. Kipling St., Unit A.

  • Sealed with a title

    LAKEWOOD — Personal bests and school records were shattered by Evergreen High School track and field competitors over the weekend.

    But, the Cougars saved their best performance for last at the 2009 state track and field championships at Jeffco Stadium.

    The boys’ 4x400-meter relay team of Bryson Newhall, Jeff Troyano, Andrew Gysin and Nat Prouty set a new school record, and more importantly, won a state title with a time of 3 minutes, 20.13 seconds.

  • Conifer’s Treat snags pair of state titles

    The 200-yard freestyle has always been Christian Treat’s favorite race.

    On May 16, Treat turned his favorite race into a championship race, winning the Class 4A state title in the event with a time of 1 minute, 41.79 seconds.

    “I’ve been working hard for a long time and I just have a feeling of incredible pride,” said Treat, who wasn’t satisfied with just one title, as the Clear Creek senior who swims for Conifer also won the 100 freestyle.

    After winning the 200, Treat said the 100 was a little easier to get through.

  • Fire board president forbids criticizing individuals at meetings

    Public criticism of individuals during board meetings of the Evergreen Fire Protection District has led the board president to warn against singling out individuals in negative comments.

    “Any negative comments by any attendee against any named citizen, volunteer, paid employee or this board will immediately be declared out of order, and an executive session will be declared or scheduled to allow both sides to privately discuss their opinions,” Chick Dykeman announced at the May 12 meeting.
