  • Open Space eyes trail changes at Apex Park

    The Jeffco Open Space Department is holding two open houses to gather information from the public on how to increase the safety of Apex Park users and to provide positive experiences at the park. Suggestions from the public are due June 30.

    Apex Park comprises 770 acres at the junction of U.S. 40 and County Road 93, adjacent to Heritage Square. The Apex Trail connects the Heritage Square parking lot with the Lookout Mountain Nature Center nearly 3 miles west.

  • Evergreen bank forecloses on Denver Civic Theatre building

    Evergreen National Bank was forced to foreclose on the building that houses the Denver Civic Theatre at 721 Santa Fe Drive in Denver after the building owner stopped making mortgage payments. The bank now owns the building.

    The Denver Civic Theatre Co., the main tenant in the building, fell behind by about $100,000 on the rent, which was being paid directly to the bank.

    The theater company has been paying some money to the bank over the last few months but was unable to make up the total by the May 29 deadline.

  • EPRD board revises plans for building at Buchanan

    The Evergreen Park and Recreation District board has decided to go forward with a proposed $150,000 bare-bones building at Buchanan Park that is more storage-oriented than office-oriented, at least for now.

    The initial concept for the building included three enclosed offices for park operations personnel until board member Roger Hoaglund raised questions about the proposed office space, which he felt was unnecessary and could be located somewhere else.

  • Reaction mixed to review of 3 top-paid fire district posts

    A proposal to downsize a top-paid segment of the staff at Evergreen Fire/Rescue received a mixed reception from the audience and five members of the district board at a special meeting May 27.

    Board member George Kling led the meeting, because a month ago he initiated the idea of examining certain job descriptions to look for waste or duplication of effort.

    About 20 people were in the audience, including the three whose jobs were under discussion. One of the three brought a video camera on a tripod to tape the panel discussion.

  • Two development proposals OK’d at El Rancho Town Center

    A couple of new developments are in the works for the commercial area known as the El Rancho Town Center, just west of the Walmart store at Interstate 70 and Evergreen Parkway.

    On May 27 the county commissioners approved the final plat for the third commercial building in the large, mixed-use complex that now houses Starbucks, Trinity Pub, Bicycle Connection and Qdoba.

    The third lot, between the parking lot and the Honka Building, is approved for a maximum three-story structure with 21,000 square feet.

  • Wah Keeney landowner cited for grading without permit

    An unusually wet spring and continued random, intermittent earthmoving activities on Wah Keeney Mountain are making a nightmare out of what should be an idyllic spring for residents on Columbine Way.

    Springtime projects culminated with the Jeffco County Planning and Zoning Department issuing a zoning violation notice on May 12 against Xcel Energy Co. and landowner Richard Morgan of Wheat Ridge for improper grading activity at 29592 Spruce Road.

  • BREAKING NEWS: Fire engine rolls off road on Floyd Hill

    A 1997 Evergreen Fire/Rescue fire engine rolled off a steep road on Floyd Hill on Tuesday, completed one whole revolution, and pancaked an empty, vintage 1969 Pontiac Firebird parked 25 feet below.

    Neither the driver of the fire truck, Mike Weege, nor anyone else was hurt in the accident, which happened about 1 p.m. as the truck was heading downhill from a routine suspicious-odor call.

    It went off the road above the home of Bill and Arnetta Vickery at 872 Ponderosa Drive, above Clear Creek High School.

  • Cat Lodge is the ultimate in feline accommodations

    There are people who like cats, there are cat lovers ee" and then you have Mike and Susan Nocket.

    They are in a league of their own when it comes to loving felines.

    The couple love cats so much that they have remodeled their house into a cat hotel called the Evergreen Cat Lodge, with 32 small rooms for felines that owners can rent. Each room, which is roughly 50 square feet, is decorated like a room in a house. Some have living room chairs and electric fireplaces; others have beds; some are garden rooms and play rooms.

  • 2009 legislative session brought good and bad

    The 2009 legislative session ended May 6. As a freshman member of the House, several people have asked me what I thought of the session. In truth, I feel a bit like Dorothy in “The Wizard of Oz” after spinning around in the tornado and finally being dropped back into Kansas. The good news is that I live in Colorado, not Kansas. The bad news is many of the changes this legislative session will bring for the people of Colorado.
