  • Evergreen resident becomes district court judge

    Gov. Bill Ritter last week appointed Evergreen resident Christine Bachmeyer Phillips as a new district judge in the 1st Judicial District, which serves Gilpin and Jefferson counties.

    She fills the vacancy created by the resignation of M.J. Menendez, who returned to the U.S. attorney’s office in Denver after two years on the bench.

    Phillips worked as a civil lawyer for a private law firm for four years out of law school but since then has been in government.

  • Fire board axes communications manager job

    The job reduction is part of an ongoing initiative, spearheaded by board member George Kling, to reduce the layers of management and shrink salary costs.

    Fire Chief Garry DeJong said he would follow the board’s mandate and make sure McMahan’s departure doesn’t negatively impact either the department or the public. “The board is trying to find ways to make the organization more effective and efficient, and that’s where we are headed,” DeJong said.

    The news came as a surprise to McMahan, who has been in the job for 14 months.

  • An event for the ages: Life Care Center residents mingle with kids at country fair

    Some things never change.

    At a fair, the band will always play “You Are My Sunshine,” and kids will eat sweets and run everywhere they go. There are quilts and cornhusks, and everyone wears brightly colored hats and spends a little too much time in the sun.

    Also, ask a woman her age, and she’ll tell you that you don’t want to know. That’s how most of the female residents of the Life Care Center in Evergreen responded to questions about their age.

  • Beer with president was a great idea

    Although I don’t agree with President Obama on many policy issues, his “beer summit” last week turned out to be a novel and very effective way of using the power of the presidency to defuse a potentially volatile situation.

    And while it remains to be seen what the longer term effects will be, it may turn out to have a significant positive impact on race relations going forward.

    The controversy erupted a few days earlier, when African-American Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates accused Boston police Sgt. James Crowley of racial profiling.

    This year the church, south of Evergreen on Highway 73, will celebrate its 20th year presenting what has become known as “the best garage sale in the mountains.” It will be open for business from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

  • Jeffco investment manager projects 2.3 percent return in 2009

    Jeffco’s investment managers expect to earn $7 million in investment income in 2009, which would be an average 2.3 percent return.

    Jeffco treasury officer and portfolio manager Mark Hubbard told the county commissioners Aug. 4 that the county’s investment portfolio was at about $304 million at the end of June and that the county had already earned nearly $4.3 million on interest in 2009. Earnings are expected to rise to $7 million by the end of 2009, Hubbard said.

  • County files motion to restrict former attorney’s testimony in lawsuit

    Former county attorney Frank Hutfless may have violated attorney-client privilege by offering to testify against the county in a federal wiretapping lawsuit, according to the Jefferson County Attorney's Office, and the county is now asking a federal judge to make sure it doesn't happen again.
