A couple of brothers who grew up in Evergreen are spending the summer riding across America to raise money for PUSH America, a charity that helps the disabled. They have pledged to raise $10,000.

Bobby Blackstock, 21, and Charlie Blackstock, 19, are members of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, which supports the PUSH charity nationwide. Many of the 100 or so Journey of Hope bike riders are drawn from the fraternity’s ranks.

Bobby has lived in Evergreen since he was 7 and has been riding mountain bikes his entire life around the area.

The weather was beautiful Saturday for the first day of what might be the first-ever Kittredge flea market.

More than a half-dozen vendors displayed their wares in the west parking lot of the former Evergreen Nursery on Highway 74 in Kittredge. A steady trickle of people strolled through the lot to check out the offerings, which ran the gamut from books, CDs and records to furniture, bicycle tires and jams.

There was food from a CJ’s Chicago Style Hotdogs and music by the band My Friend Tom.

How many seconds does it take to cross the finish line, what is the top speed and was it all better than the car running next to you?

So with that simple and relatively pure way to look at things, some of the numbers hanging around this sport, which saw the top drivers and crews in the nation make their annual pilgrimage to the Mile-High Nationals at Bandimere Speedway this past weekend, are quite sobering.

Toes will be tapping, venues will be packed and Evergreen will get a bit more hip for three days as the town welcomes back the Evergreen Jazz Festival July 24-26.

The extravaganza will feature more than 70 hours of live music and 10 performing ensembles ranging in genre from Dixieland to swing to ragtime. Each day will feature free dance lessons, and the festival will kick off with an educational clinic given by the Carl Sonny Leyland Trio along with saxophonist and vocalist Anita Thomas.
