Quigley is Evergreen Meadows’ new best friend.

The 4-year-old soft-coated Wheaten terrier saved the subdivision along Highway 73 from a wildfire on March 18. He was honored Monday night by Evergreen firefighters for his keen sense of smell and perseverance in getting his owner to walk across the backyard and find flames in a pile of dry pine needles on a neighbor’s property. The fire ignited after ashes that weren’t completely cooled had been thrown out, and the wind re-ignited them.

The water flowing from Mount Evans into the Bear Creek watershed is at the lowest level since the drought in 2002, said Evergreen Metropolitan District environmental technician Tony Langowski.

Although the water quality is generally good, the lack of snowpack has greatly reduced the volume this season — a scenario that affects aquatic as well as human life.

Last summer, water levels dropped to the point where there were water-use restrictions for the district, and fishing opportunities were limited.

Evergreen Fire Protection District board member David Christensen said that before voting to build the fire training facility, he weighed thoroughly the pros and cons. He came to the conclusion that the facility in progress at Fire Station 2 is necessary, and will dramatically improve firefighters’ ability to save property and lives.

“If we have one good outcome, we’ve paid for it,” he said.
