  • Enter Callie’s ‘art world’

    When she was a young girl, Callie Graham of Bailey escaped the frustrations associated with dyslexia by entering her “art world.”

    Now, at age 15, art is the dominant theme in her world — and the arena where she excels.

    Callie’s drawings are on display in “The Dreams Within Us,” an exhibit at Shadow Mountain Gallery in Evergreen. The 15-year-old’s work — pencil drawings primarily of characters from “Lord of the Rings” and “Pirates of the Caribbean” — will be on exhibit until April 21.

  • LESSON PLANS: Wilmot to celebrate 50th anniversary with walk down memory lane

    Wilmot Elementary School is planning a party April 30 to celebrate its 50th anniversary with building tours and a look at Wilmot through the years.

    Alums, former staff, parents and the community are invited to the celebration, called World of Wilmot: Then and Now, which will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the school, 5124 S. Hatch Drive.

  • Evergreen Middle off-center with Schuh’s imminent departure

    Principal Kristopher Schuh knows the name of every one of the 682 students at Evergreen Middle School.

    Not only does he know their names, he knows a little something about each of them, according to the teachers. That is part of what makes Schuh such a great principal, and what makes the faculty and staff sad that he is leaving EMS at the end of the school year. Schuh is joining 15 of his colleagues in the School Innovation and Effectiveness Division at the district level.

  • 3 mountain principals joining team to improve district schools

    The Jeffco school district has tapped three mountain area principals to take new achievement director positions at the district level.

    Dr. Mike Musick from Conifer High School, Matt Walsh from Evergreen High and Kristopher Schuh from Evergreen Middle will finish the current school year before taking their new positions. Searches already are under way to find new principals.

  • Walsh’s departure a hard lesson for EHS teachers

    For the faculty at Evergreen High School, a good thing is ending much too soon, as principal Matt Walsh prepares to leave at the end of the school year.

    While they are happy that Walsh will be one of 16 Jeffco school district employees in the new School Innovation and Effectiveness Division, they are sad to see him go.

    In the five years that Walsh has been EHS principal, he has made friends among faculty, parents, staff and the community.

    Fire board recall candidate Jodi Kesten says that information on the recall committee website about her experience with the Long Beach Fire Department and work history in Evergreen is valid, and independent checks confirm several of those resume entries.

    Members of the no-recall committee have questioned Kesten’s credentials as a volunteer firefighter and her past employment with the Life Care Center and the Seniors’ Resource Center in Evergreen.

  • 'A whole lot more than chickens'

    Returning to a simpler time when people grew the food they ate is a dream of those involved in community gardening efforts. 

    During his presentation, Rusty Collins, Denver director for the Colorado State University Extension Service, said that only 1 percent of the food consumed in the state is grown locally. Shifting that percentage to 20 by the year 2020 is a goal of his organization, he said.

    “Urban agriculture is a whole lot more than chickens,” Collins told a group at the Evergreen Fire/Rescue auditorium on Sunday.

    Facing Evergreen Fire/Rescue staff and firefighters, the four challengers in the fire board recall election fielded questions about their intentions and qualifications at their April 3 forum.
    Candidates Dan Koller, Paul Peil, Jodi Kesten and Barry Pier held the event at Evergreen High School to present their views on issues related to the recall campaign of four Evergreen Fire Protection District board members. The school auditorium was filled with residents who challenged the candidates with questions written on index cards, which moderator Jim Sherwood read to them.
