    Former Jeffco Treasurer Mark Paschall — on trial on two felony counts related to an alleged kickback scheme — will argue that Commissioner Jim Congrove set him up in a case of political “payback,” according to opening statements in Paschall’s trial.

    “This case is not about a kickback,” said David Lane, Paschall’s attorney. “It’s about a payback.”

  • School bus, plow have close encounter

    Some Bergen kids had a ripping story to tell their parents around the dinner table on Monday.

    As their school bus drove along the snow-deep streets at about Inverness and Canterbury in the Hiwan Country Club, they got clipped by a county plow truck. It was a glancing blow and, according to Jefferson County Schools spokewoman Lynn Setzer, damage was minimal.

  • Jeffco schools pull beef from lunch menus

    Jeffco Public Schools is one of several districts in Colorado that has pulled beef from its lunch menus this week in response to an undercover Humane Society investigation that showed improper practices in a slaughterhouse.

    Commodity beef — loose meat made into hamburger or otherwise processed — from Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. is the culprit for the lunchtime adjustment. Humane Society insider video showed one of Westland’s slaughterhouses processing “downer cows,” or cows that were abused or too sick to stand.
