    Thanks to high-speed Internet, Carmen Allgood can produce and host a syndicated radio show airing all over the world from her funky cabin in a ponderosa patch near El Rancho.

    “Indie Music Wave,” also known as “The Colorado Wave,” focuses exclusively on unknown, unsigned, independent bands and artists, a trendy segment of the music industry these days.

    "All these stations are saying you are really a dud if you don't include music by indie artists," Allgood said.

  • Girl Scouts set to begin annual sales calls

    Soon the Evergreen and Conifer area Girl Scouts will offer a sweet start to the New Year.
    The annual cookie sale begins Jan.7, and the girls are gearing up for their best year ever. The sale will last until March 13, and beginning Friday, Feb. 18, they’ll be a familiar sight selling cookies in front of local grocery stores.
    Troop 3632 in Conifer has 16 girls, and last year they sold 818 boxes of cookies, according to Carri Robinson, troop leader.

    So when the Evergreen High School boys lacrosse coach died Dec. 20 due to complications from carcinoid cancer, a rare form of neuroendocrine cancer, at the age of 36 he left behind a passion for the game that won’t soon be forgotten.

  • Bentek agrees to be acquired by Platts

    A division of McGraw-Hill Cos. has agreed to acquire Bentek Energy LLC, a privately held company based in Evergreen. Terms of the deal were not disclosed in the Dec. 16 announcement.

    The deal is expected to close in 2011. Bentek will continue to operate under the current name with the same management.

    Bentek is known for providing information services in the field of natural gas markets. It employs about 100 people in offices on Castle Court off Evergreen Parkway.

  • Zoril named chief of Foothills Fire & Rescue

    Interim acting fire chief Brian Zoril, a longtime volunteer firefighter, has been named chief of Foothills Fire & Rescue, it was announced Dec. 29. He becomes the second paid fire chief hired in the last 12 months and the second in the organization's history.

    The headquarters station is at Interstate 70 and Evergreen Parkway, where the department is building a new garage.
