  • Six in the running for four fire board seats

    Two new faces, Kenny Erhardt and Jeff Ashford, have entered the May 6 race for the four open seats on the five-member board of the Evergreen Fire Protection District. Both are longtime members of the volunteer firefighters’ organization.

    They will be competing for the jobs against four incumbents who have decided to run again: Jeff deDisse, Charles “Chick” Dykeman, George Goldbach and Lloyd See.

  • A tie that binds: Jeffco leash law

    With an abundance of dogs living in close proximity to a healthy population of mountain lions, the number of confrontations, injuries and lion attacks on dogs is on the upswing in the Evergreen area.

    But that’s only one reason why it’s a good idea to keep dogs on leashes at all times. The other reason is that it is illegal to let a dog off leash almost everywhere in Jefferson County, except on privately owned property. The other exception is designated off-leash areas.

  • Curious critters invade Hiwan Homestead Museum

    For the next few weeks, visitors to the Hiwan Homestead Museum would do well to look sharp. The place is crawling with Naugas.

    What’s a Nauga? Imagine a throw pillow with 2-inch claws, big googly eyes and a broad, toothy grin, and you’ve got the flavor of it.

    “I think Naugas look like something from Monsters Inc.,” says Hiwan program coordinator Meghan McGinnes, “but I’ve heard people say they remind them of ‘Where the Wild Things Are.’ ”

  • Paschall found not guilty of soliciting kickback

    More than a year after being indicted in an alleged kickback scheme when investigators produced a recording that seemed to suggest guilt, former Jeffco treasurer Mark Paschall was found not guilty of one of the felony counts he was facing.

    The second count — compensation for past official behavior — left the jury deadlocked, and lawyers will come together at 8 a.m. Feb. 28 to determine if that charge will be retried or dismissed.

  • School district weighs putting tax hike on November ballot issue

    Jeffco Public Schools is in early discussions regarding a possible bond issue and tax increase on the November ballot.

    Superintendent Cindy Stevenson said the district has begun talking about the idea of a bond and mill levy with its staff and the public. The decision ultimately lies with the school board, which has until August or September to move forward.

    “I would say there’s a likelihood we will, but the decision has to be formalized by the Board of Education,” Stevenson said.

  • Candidates sought for 2 EPRD board seats

    The Evergreen Park and Recreation District is looking for a few good men and women who’d like to serve on its board.

    Come May, board members Jeff Knetsch and Geoff Wormer will have finished their tour, and their seats will be up for grabs. Civic-minded individuals interested taking a crack at the openings have until 5 p.m. Feb. 29 to throw their hats in the ring.

    Judging by Super Tuesday caucus attendance at Evergreen High School, local Democratic Party troops are fully mobilized and highly motivated.

    Thirteen precincts met at the school for what, during previous election cycles, has been a fairly casual confab.

  • Car thief assaults two in Genesee

    What began as a car theft in Genesee may result in attempted-murder charges following a terrifying Sunday morning ordeal.

    According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Nicholas Andrew Ray Finney, 19, of Bennett, is suspected of stealing a Cadillac Escalade from a home on Sawmill Gulch Road about 8 a.m. Feb. 10.

  • Friends hold farewell roast for Dick Wulf

    On the evening of Feb. 5, a small group of friends and supporters gathered at the Evergreen Recreation Center to bid a fond farewell to semi-retired EPRD director Dick Wulf.

    Make that a large group. The center’s multipurpose room was filled to capacity with district employees, former EPRD board members and dozens of others who merely wanted to lend their presence to what turned out to be a very enjoyable event.
