  • Growing EHS field band gives students more to love

    To achieve a really eye-popping, bleacher-shaking, spirit-raising, rabble-rousing, scream-yourself-hoarse halftime show, bigger is definitely better. And Evergreen High School’s first-rate Cougar Marching Band is getting better all the time.

    “Four years ago, there were less than 50 kids in the marching band, and there were 63 when I took over,” says Michelle Knight, who accepted EHS’ instrumental music baton in 2007. “We’ve got 78 now, and I think it will probably keep growing.”

  • Rocky Mountain academy plans big camping trip

    Ryan Lucas, director of Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen, has decided to go camping with a few of his closest friends — all of the families at the school.

    Lucas says he’s never tried a school-wide camping trip before, but he’s hoping families will join him at the Arrowhead Point Camping Resort near Buena Vista Sept. 12-14.

    “I’m an outdoors kind of person,” Lucas said. “With this trip, I can combine doing something I love with bringing the whole school together.”

  • Nonprofit helps single moms, widows with car repairs

    If you’re a single mom or a widow and are having car troubles you really can’t afford right now, Hands of the Carpenter can save the day.

    Hands, a Golden faith-based nonprofit, will send you to one of its partnering auto repair shops in Jefferson or Denver counties and have your problem fixed at no cost to you. Before long, founder Dan Georgopulos hopes to have the nonprofit’s own shop open and ready to serve.

  • Hamilton will stay on fire board another month

    Jaine Hamilton is delaying her departure and staying on the Evergreen Fire Protection District board for at least a month beyond her previously announced effective resignation date of Oct. 1.

    A member of the board since 2002, Hamilton officially announced her resignation July 25.

    Her decision will not affect the board’s timetable to name a replacement, board president Chick Dykeman said Aug. 28. In the event of a resignation, the board is authorized to appoint a person who serves the remainder of the term. Hamilton’s term expires in 2010.

  • EPRD board to study feasibility of buildings in Buchanan Park

    After a contentious discussion that lasted until 1 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27, the board of directors of the Evergreen Park and Recreation District agreed to pursue a Buchanan Park improvements study as well as a new comprehensive community survey.

    But the order in which the two things will proceed was left up for future discussion.

    The board agreed to assign most of the responsibility for defining the scope of studies to district executive director John Skeel after he volunteered to take on the assignment.

  • An enchanted evening at Invesco for area's Obama fans

    The fourth night of the Democratic National Convention in Denver on Aug. 28 turned out to be the Cinderella night that Evergreen area Obama supporters dreamed it would be.

    The transportation, the entertainment, the celebrity and camaraderie at Mile High seemed to confirm that America is a place where ordinary people can influence the course of world affairs.

    Everyone contacted had rave reviews for the event in general and for the landmark speech by Barack Obama, the first African-American to be nominated as a candidate for president of the United States.

  • Motorist airlifted from O'Fallon accident scene

    A motorist suffering a medical emergency caused an accident in the parking lot of O’Fallon Park near Kittredge on Highway 74 about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 3.

    A helicopter was called to take the person, who was in critical condition, to St. Anthony Hospital in Denver, said Evergreen Fire Chief Garry DeJong, who went to the accident scene.

    Evergreen Fire/Rescue, the Colorado State Patrol and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office also responded.

  • Wandering elk discovers swingset is no fun

    Wildlife officers last Thursday morning chased a 300-pound elk with half a swingset tangled in its antlers before finally subduing the animal and removing the hardware headgear.

    The officers pursued the elk for half a mile before shooting it with a tranquilizer gun at 29826 Bronco Road, where it collapsed about 11:15 a.m.

    The elk had a green baby seat, some rope and a 5-foot-long piece of timber snagged in its four-point antlers after grazing too close to some play equipment, probably in the Tanoa subdivision.

  • Political newcomer challenging DA Storey

    When Jefferson County District Attorney Scott Storey announced in January that he’d be seeking a second term, there was no word on whom the Democrats might run against him.

    Eight months later — and just three months before the November election — Storey finally has an opponent.

    Vicky Peters, a Lakewood Democrat coming off a 20-year career as an environmental attorney in the Colorado attorney general's office, is Storey's challenger.

  • Judgment day slow in coming for 'Cabin Baby' arsonists

    Justice delayed, they say, is justice denied, but on Aug. 21 John Stuckless and Cathie Messa looked forward to a just and certain end to a long and painful ordeal.

    It’s been nearly a year since Gregory Allen Leon and Summer Lynn Baker, both now 25, robbed the Stuckless home on Armadillo Trail and then set it afire.
