  • Thousands turn out to see Palin at Jeffco Fairgrounds

    Doors opened at 7 a.m. Sept. 15 for Sarah Palin’s appearance at the Westernaires Equestrian Center at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds, but that wasn't early enough for some.

    Thousands turned out to see the Alaska governor, who has electrified the campaign of Sen. John McCain since he named her as his running mate.

  • Motorcyclist critically injured in I-70 crash

    JEFFERSON COUNTY — An Idaho Springs man was thrown 50 feet Thursday afternoon after losing control of his motorcycle while allegedly racing another motorist on I-70.

    Steven P. Smith, 39, was heading west on I-70 near Lookout Mountain when his red 1998 Honda motorcycle crossed two lanes and hit the guardrail. Police said witnesses reported that a black 2004 Porsche was racing with Smith’s motorcycle. Smith was airlifted to St. Anthony Hospital with serious bodily injury and as of Friday afternoon remained in critical condition.

  • Call goes out for volunteer firefighters

    If you live in Evergreen and always wanted to be a firefighter, now is the time to apply for a spot in the volunteer fire department.

    The department is looking to beef up the volunteer force with new recruits, and the application deadline is Nov. 1.

    “Most people don’t even know Evergreen Fire/Rescue consists of people like your next-door neighbor, an engineer, a truck driver or local small-business owner,” said Mike Bleidl, training coordinator.

  • 7 acres near Elk Meadow eyed for open space

    Jefferson County Open Space has recommended the county purchase 7 acres of residential-zoned vacant land adjacent to Elk Meadow Park for $600,000 and maintain it as a nature preserve.

    The purchase has to be voted on and approved by the county commissioners.

    The proposal was unveiled during a regular monthly meeting of the Open Space Advisory Committee in Golden on Sept. 4.

    Most of the committee members agreed the land should be incorporated into Elk Meadow Park, although two voted against the purchase for cost reasons.

  • Obama rips McCain in stop at School of Mines

    Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama came out swinging at a campaign stop in Golden on Sept. 16, the day after another Wall Street titan fell, by attacking his opponent's grasp on economic issues.

    "Over the last few days, we have seen clearly what's at stake in this election," Obama said to a crowd of about 1,000 at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. "We are in the most serious financial crisis in a generation, yet Sen. McCain stood up yesterday and said the fundamentals of our economy are strong."

  • Planning commission OKs downsizing for Elk Rest Village

    The planning commission voted 6-2 to limit the number of residential units to 12 instead of 22 in the proposed Elk Rest Village multi-use complex on Swede Gulch Road in El Rancho Town Center.

    The Sept. 10 vote affirmed the planning commission’s original decision on July 30.

    The recommendation goes next to the board of county commissioners Sept. 30 for a final decision.

    The planning commission was hearing the case for the second time after the county commissioners asked the citizen board to re-examine the allowed density level.

    Jim Spaanstra, chairman of the planning commission, argued for the higher number because of the high price of gas and the opportunity to encourage more people to work and live in the same place.
