 A sleek 1971 Karmann Ghia named Sophie is this year’s selection for the Evergreen Recreation and Park Foundation’s fund-raising raffle.

This bright blue vehicle of the Volkswagen variety will begin appearing in Evergreen for a good cause. Proceeds from raffle tickets will go toward park projects in the district. 

Encouraged by a friend who loves Tanzania, Evergreen teacher Rachel Smith spent a month last summer working with orphans in the east African country.

“I felt really good about being there,” said Smith, an English teacher at Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen. “It was definitely an incredible experience.”

Smith and her teacher friend Clara Quinlan of Louisville spent last June at the Kilimanjaro Orphanage Centre helping 49 young children learn English.

As young skiers and snowboarders careened down the rail jam course Saturday, gray snow clouds were gathering over Evergreen Lake.

Despite chilly weather and afternoon snowfall, the second annual Winter Festival at Evergreen Lake drew large crowds who came for competitive events, ice skating and other fun activities.

In the morning, riders of all ages and skill levels competed in the ice bike race across the frozen lake, jumping over hay bales and other obstacles on the course.

The 4EverGreen recycling center at King Soopers in Bergen Park is continuing to provide service to residents in the community.
EDS Waste Solutions is operating the center, as it has in the past, with one minor change. The cardboard compactor has been removed and replaced with a container similar to the existing ones at the center. People bringing cardboard for recycling are asked to flatten it before placing it in the container.
