The Cat in the Hat and his friends were alive and well at Wilmot Elementary School on Feb. 25 as everyone from the small to the tall celebrated Read Across America.

The national celebration honors Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, who was born on March 2, 1904.  Although Geisel died in 1991, his legacy of wanting children to read lives on through Read Across America. The program is sponsored by the National Education Association, and its goal is for every child to read on Dr. Seuss’s birthday. This year, Jeffco schools set Feb. 25 for the celebration.

Fourth- and fifth-graders at Marshdale Elementary School learned an important lesson Friday: They can make a difference at their school.
The children went through a half-day workshop with representatives from the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation in which they identified problems at the school and created a list of solutions.

The holidays are a time to celebrate many traditions, and at Wilmot Elementary School, the second-graders’ tradition of performing “The Gingerbread Kid Caper” continued its 11-year legacy last week.
The 18 children in Susan Jeffres’ class wore aprons and homemade chef’s hats, and stood behind tables with paper scenery that looked like a kitchen. Strewn on the tables were cookie cutters and rolling pins.

Third-graders at Parmalee Elementary School traversed Indian Hills on a guided bus tour on Friday, ending their morning excursion with a stop at a school neighbor’s property that had been an early-1900s popular tourist attraction.
The trip is an annual event for the third-graders as part of the Foothills to Freeways social studies unit, teacher Kelley Lehman said. The students begin by learning about their school community, branch out to Indian Hills and eventually will spend a day in Denver.
