  • Evergreen Country Day students run to raise funds

    Ask the students at Evergreen Country Day School to go the distance, and they do — running 465.75 miles to promote fitness and to raise money for scholarships to the school.

    The 200 students in preschool through eighth grade ran along a quarter-mile course around the school near El Rancho for two hours on May 13, the equivalent of running from the school to Albuquerque, N.M.

  • Interfaith service gives a grads a spiritual boost

    Conifer and Evergreen high school graduates were given blessings from several faiths on Sunday at The Barn in Marshdale as the students prepare to start their journey into the future.

    More than a half dozen clergy representing a foothills interfaith group conducted the service, called Blessing You on Your Journey, with about two dozen people, including a couple of seniors, attending.

    The audience heard blessings from religions including the Christian, Buddhist, Jewish and Hindu faiths and listened to inspirational music.

  • Marshdale students get down to earth

    For students at Marshdale Elementary School, Earth Day was more than just a regular school day. Parents, teachers and PTA members transformed the day into an experiential learning celebration so students could discover ways to become environmental stewards both in and out of the classroom.

  • Fifth-place finish sweet for Poms at nationals

    Surreal, like a dream and a cherry on the top of the cake were terms used by the captains of the Evergreen Poms as they recalled taking fifth place nationally earlier this year in a dance team competition.

    The team of 17 girls performed in the Universal Dance Association competition in Florida in a field of 80 teams from public, private and performance high schools. The team performed a traditional hip-hop routine with a lot of tricks.

    The competition among the teams was tough.

  • Library interns get a read on their duties

    The librarian at Wilmot Elementary School has been able to turn a negative into a positive.

    When the library aide position was cut at the school, librarian Michele Bergeron-Coldsnow thought about who might be available to help with the day-to-day operations in the library. She turned to the school’s fifth-graders and created eight positions called library apprentices.

  • Going green: Leprechaun snares gold, eludes the traps set by Parmalee students

    Never underestimate the ingenuity of a leprechaun.

    A wily leprechaun visited Brandy Gulliford’s kindergarten classroom at Parmalee Elementary School last week, and he was so clever that he sprung each of the 26 traps the children made and made off with some of the fake gold coins they left as bait.

    The children came into the classroom March 10 to discover that the sprite had been up to his tricks, and they also found that he had left behind a shoe. The children tried on the shoe, and one girl even started doing an Irish jig, because the shoe was magical.

  • Construction at RMAE provides multipurpose room, more classrooms

    The cast of Rocky Mountain Academy of Evergreen’s middle school musical, “The Pirates of Penzance,” has been able to practice in the school’s new multipurpose room.

    The spacious room is part of a lower level that was added to the easternmost building of the school at 2959 Royale Elk Way.

    The multipurpose room is used, for example, as a cafeteria, for school assemblies, for physical education classes and as a place for students to have recess when the weather is poor. And it also makes a good rehearsal room.

  • Cool cats at Wilmot keep reading under their hats

    The Cat in the Hat and his friends were alive and well at Wilmot Elementary School on Feb. 25 as everyone from the small to the tall celebrated Read Across America.

    The national celebration honors Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, who was born on March 2, 1904.  Although Geisel died in 1991, his legacy of wanting children to read lives on through Read Across America. The program is sponsored by the National Education Association, and its goal is for every child to read on Dr. Seuss’s birthday. This year, Jeffco schools set Feb. 25 for the celebration.

  • EMS students have rich experience with ‘Fiddler’

    The strains of Broadway musical show tunes are once again filling the halls of Evergreen Middle School.

    This time it’s “If I Were a Rich Man” and “Sunrise, Sunset,” as 60 students prepare to perform “Fiddler on the Roof” at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 24 and 25 in the school cafeteria.

    “This is one of my favorite shows,” said director and instrumental music teacher Missy Calkin. “I performed in this show when I was in high school.”

  • Lessons in change

    Fourth- and fifth-graders at Marshdale Elementary School learned an important lesson Friday: They can make a difference at their school.
    The children went through a half-day workshop with representatives from the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation in which they identified problems at the school and created a list of solutions.
