The foundation that saved Jeffco schools’ Outdoor Education Labs celebrated its fund-raising success on Jan. 25 but is steeling itself for more efforts to keep the sixth-grade program operating for another year.

Several board members from the Outdoor Lab Foundation presented checks at the Windy Peaks facility near Bailey last Wednesday and at the Mount Evans facility. The two schools provide a week of outdoor-education classes to sixth-graders throughout the district each school year.

Marshdale Elementary School has found another way to raise money by becoming a partner with the Jefferson Foundation.
Anyone who makes a donation to the school through the foundation gets a tax deduction, and school officials hope that will create more incentive to help the school pay for things that are not being funded because of budget cuts.

Getting acclimated to Evergreen has had its ups and downs for Evergreen High School’s foreign exchange students.

The eight, all but one hailing from Europe, have found their classmates and teachers to be more open and welcoming than their counterparts in their home countries. Yet it’s been a difficult adjustment for some to be away from friends, family and the familiar.

Six of them had lunch recently and talked about their experiences in Evergreen.

Diversity. Inclusiveness. Acceptance.

Those words describe the goals of Evergreen High School’s first ever Diversity Day on Friday.

Students spent the morning learning about everything from Evergreen’s homeless to salsa dancing. They heard from speakers telling about the Lost Boys of the Sudan to what it’s like to be a hearing child of deaf parents.
