  • Board approves Witt's pay plan for teachers on 3-2 vote

    The Jeffco school board approved a new teacher compensation plan at last Thursday’s meeting that ties pay raises to performance. 

    Under the new plan, “partially effective” teachers who are still in their first three years will receive a 1 percent raise. Teachers rated “effective” will receive a 2.43 percent raise. Teachers rated “highly effective” will receive a 4.25 percent raise.

  • King-Murphy second-graders urge peers to look in out-of-the-way places for change to donate to African kids

    Second-graders at King-Murphy Elementary School have been raising money to help provide children in Africa with the school supplies they need.

    In the process, they might have gotten their homes a bit cleaner.

    They call the fund-raiser Digging for Dozens of Dimes. Children went home and cleaned under furniture and in clothes pockets, and looked in other out-of-the-way places to find spare change to donate to the program.

  • Search process begins for new superintendent

    Ray and Associates has begun the process of searching for Jeffco Public Schools’ new superintendent.

    Bill Newman of the Iowa-based search firm said at the school board meeting March 6 that he had interviewed all the board members and was getting an idea of what they are looking for in a new leader for the 85,000-student district.

    The board finalized some details so that Ray and Associates can start recruiting candidates.

  • 250 demonstrate for 'fair' negotiations with teachers

    More than 250 people, mostly teachers, showed up at Golden High School last Thursday to urge the Jeffco school board to conduct fair and pleasant employee negotiations.

    “We wanted to give our members a chance to make a positive statement that we are standing together and holding our school board accountable,” said Ami Prichard, president of the Jefferson County Education Association, the teachers union.

    Keeping class sizes low and increasing pay for teachers and staff were the top two priorities of about 100 mountain area parents, teachers, administrators and community members as they considered what should be included in the Jeffco Public Schools 2014-15 budget.

    Also high on the list were early literacy programs, elementary math instruction, infrastructure in schools to operate necessary technology, and elective classes.

  • Stevenson gets $204,194 in separation agreement

    Former Jeffco schools Superintendent Cindy Stevenson received $204,194 in her separation agreement with the district after her last day Feb. 21.

    On Nov. 7, two days after the new conservative majority was elected to the school board, Stevenson announce she would retire effective June 30. On Feb. 8, she said she wasn’t trusted by the new board majority and asked the board to approve an earlier exit.

  • School board doesn’t appoint interim superintendent

    Jeffco Public Schools’ core leadership team will continue to act as superintendent for the rest of the school year as the Board of Education moves forward with its search for a successor to Cindy Stevenson.

    After discussion at the board’s meeting last Thursday, no change was made to the previous week’s decision not to appoint an individual to serve as interim superintendent. 

    On Feb. 18, the board voted 3-2 not to make a temporary appointment, with the agreement that the board would discuss the topic again Feb. 27.

  • Spelling it out: Evergreen students show off their knowledge during area bee

    It’s difficult enough to spell some English words correctly, let alone French words that are part of the English language.

    Ask the two finalists in the Evergreen Area Spelling Bee. In the final round of the bee last Thursday, they drew the words “fait accompli” and “bourgeois.”

    Katherine Ashby, a fifth-grader at Wilmot, spelled “fait accompli” correctly. The second-place finisher, Keaton Gressman, a Bergen Valley fifth-grader, had trouble with “bourgeois.”

  • Iowa-based firm will search for new school superintendent

    The Jeffco school board has selected a search firm to help find the successor to former superintendent Cindy Stevenson.

    The board heard presentations from two search firms at its Feb. 18 study session, and Ray and Associates was selected to find potential candidates to lead Colorado’s largest school district.

    Iowa-based Ray and Associates will charge $44,580 for its search, which will include conducting community meetings, recruiting, screening, interviewing and selecting a final pool of candidates.
