  • New salon aims to keep customers relaxed, in style

    When Gina Larzalere decided to open a hair salon in Marshdale, she was looking for a name that would encompass how people feel in the shop.

    She settled on “relax.”

    The Relax Salon and Color Studio opened in early October at 6941 Highway 73 in the space vacated by Stefano’s Bakery and Deli. It’s decorated in what Larzalere calls a modern Southwestern style. She very concerned with how people feel when they are in the salon, so she plays a relaxing, eclectic mix of music and burns scented candles.

  • Tuscany Tavern celebrating 10 years in Evergreen

    A popular North Evergreen restaurant has celebrated its 10-year milestone, and its owners are happy to be part of the Evergreen community.

    “I love the restaurant business,” said Tuscany Tavern owner Rick Egloff. “I love the people. The restaurant venue has come to be a community.”

    The restaurant opened on Aug. 28, 2000, offering moderately priced Italian fare. Egloff wanted it to be a place where families could come to celebrate special occasions and for people to just get a good meal.

  • Park scholarship fund gets $30,000 boost

     The Tuttle Family Foundation has donated $30,000 to the scholarship fund for users of Evergreen Park and Recreation District facilities and programs.

    The scholarships, which are open to park district residents, are made available through the Evergreen Recreation and Park Foundation, a separate nonprofit affiliated with the district. Since the program started, it has made available individual grants totaling $10,000, said Kit Darrow, president of the Recreation and Parks Foundation.

  • Watermark II dips toe in local gift market

    With its trademark checkered brown-and-white floor and its aqua walls, Watermark II in Bergen Village has opened for business.
    The store boasts everything from stationery and cards to unique gifts. One of the more unusual display cases in the store is a huge old-fashioned bathtub with bath products displayed.

  • Ice House still looking for new owners

    The owners of the Ice House Cafe in downtown Evergreen have learned that it’s better not to count your chickens before they’re hatched.

    Charles and Cindy Shirley thought they had found buyers for their coffee shop and music venue in Chris and Dave King, a Denver family group with extensive hospitality and music experience.

    Last week the deal fell through.

    So the Shirleys again are looking for buyers. They are selling the shop located in the lobby of the Evergreen Hotel to pay for medical bills.

  • Hearthfire Books turns the page with new owner

    After more than a year of searching, Hearthfire Books in Bergen Park has a new owner, who says she’s now living her dream of being in the mountains and owning a bookstore.

    Kappy Kling has left the hectic corporate life in Dallas, where she sold enterprise software, in favor of a slower pace as a bookstore proprietor.

    Kling bought the store from Lori Underwood, who formerly lived in Evergreen but now lives in Connecticut. Underwood wanted the Hearthfire owner to be local.

  • Business Beat: Overseas Cafe brings a taste of Europe to Evergreen

    A new eatery with a European flair has opened in North Evergreen.

    Called the Overseas Café, the restaurant serves breakfast and lunch all day, and owners Dima and Luba Karpov hope the restaurant will become a favorite for Evergreen residents and tourists.

    Located in the Hiwan Barn shopping center, it will serve Russian, Ukranian, German and Italian foods with a small bakery, smoothies, cappuccinos, sandwiches and paninis. It will also have a kids play room.

  • Business Beat: Overseas Cafe plans grand opening

    The Overseas Café at 1552 Bergen Parkway, Unit 305, is planning a grand opening from Tuesday, June 1, through June 6.

    The restaurant will be giving away a free cup of coffee and a cookie on those days.

    Regular hours will be Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

  • Evergreen, Clear Creek national banks seek merger

    Evergreen National Bank has applied to banking authorities for approval to merge with Clear Creek National Bank, which is headquartered in Georgetown and has a branch and a drive-up bank in Idaho Springs.

    All of the existing locations are expected to continue operating.

    Both banks are owned by the same holding company, Evergreen Bancorporation of Evergreen but have been operated as independent banks for many years.

  • Business Beat: Chamber chief sees signs of life in local economy

    For Evergreen businesses, the economic downturn over the past couple of years has had a silver lining.

    “I’m really noticing that our businesses are starting to work together more to promote themselves and promote the community,” said Melanie Nuchols, president of the Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce. “Our businesses are working together, and our nonprofits are working together and joining forces.”

    While Evergreen businesses and organizations worked together before the recession, the cooperation has increased substantially, she said.
