    Evergreen resident Eileen Sloan never dreamed she would invent a product that helps youngsters learn to tie their shoes.

    The teacher-turned-entrepreneur has created EZLeaps, a plastic device and a seven-step process to help alleviate the frustration of shoe-tying for youngsters. Nordstrom stores are selling the product and teaching Sloan’s process during shoe-tying classes in its stores nationwide, and the devices are available at Twigs in downtown Evergreen and HearthFire Books and Treats in Bergen Park.

    Architects: Say you want to quickly get a model of a home, so a potential buyer can see a scale model rather than just the drawings.

    Artists: Say you want to make a small replica of a sculpture.

    Bakers: Say you want to top a wedding cake with likenesses of the bride and groom.

    Parents: Say you want furniture pieces for a dollhouse that are exact replicas of furniture in your house.

    All of these are possible at Evergreen’s American 3D Printing.

  • Thrills, chills — and a few spills — at 18th annual Ice Fest

    Waiting in line to take their first leap into icy waters at the Evergreen Lake Plunge on New Year’s Day, three friends were wondering what to expect.

    “Horrible!” proclaimed 11-year-old Dylan Barker while making his way toward the warmth of the changing room with buddies Hunter Fildey and Cody Boscoe, who dived with him.

    The three boys were in good company, with more than 250 people jumping into lake during the event, which benefited Drive Smart and the Evergreen Park and Recreation District’s special-needs program.

  • Evergreen welcomed many new businesses in 2013

    If the number of new businesses opening in Evergreen compared with the number that closed is any indication, the retail and restaurant market here definitely improved last year.

    Evergreen saw several new eateries and retail shops open in 2013, while less than a dozen businesses closed.

  • Cactus Jack’s reopens

    Christmas came five days early for Megan and Gary Mitchell when they reopened Cactus Jack’s Saloon on Friday.

    Customers began pouring into the iconic bar and eatery at Highway 73/74 that was extensively damaged during the September flooding, and business has been steady ever since.

    “It’s a Christmas miracle,” Megan said Sunday afternoon amid a large crowd during the Broncos game. “The response has been awesome. Everybody’s been smiling.”

  • BUSINESS BEAT: New deli opens in Evergreen Mountain Market

    A new deli has moved into Evergreen Mountain Market.

    D-Rass Deli, along with La Cuisine of Evergreen, are open in the space that has seen a variety of delis come and go over the years. 

    Owner Laurie Baumer and chef Dylan Shively use the kitchen to prepare a full catering menu of French-inspired meals and appetizers for parties and weddings. Plus, they make breakfast and lunch fare for daily consumption. All sauces are made from scratch, Baumer said.

  • BUSINESS BEAT: For HearthFire Books, a sweet expansion

    HearthFire Books is morphing into HearthFire Books and Treats.

    The bookstore in Bergen Village has taken over the space next door that had been Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt. HearthFire now offers frozen yogurt and toppings, plus coffee, tea and pastries.

    Owner Kappy Kling assures everyone that her main focus is still the books, but the frozen yogurt/coffee shop will enhance people’s experiences.

    Barb Scripps, president of Scripps, Taylor & Associates, was one of 12 Jeffco women honored by the West Chamber on Nov. 15 as part of the 2013 Celebrate Women of Jefferson County program.

    But former flight attendant Patty Petersen of Conifer has addressed the need for some helpful aerial shepherding with her business, From Air to There.

  • Bistro Colorado features field-to-table cuisine

    The owner of Bistro Colorado is confident the restaurant is here to stay, believing that the fourth time is the charm for the location in North Evergreen.

    The French bistro-style café on Bergen Parkway next to the Wood Cellar Bar and Grill opened earlier this month. Three restaurants have come and gone in that spot: Blue Spruce Market, Overseas Café and Suzie’s Café.
