  • Early birds get warm welcome at Walgreens opening

    Friday morning's opening of Evergreen's Walgreens was quite eventful for the store's first customers.

    Kristi Leinen of Evergreen had the distinction of being the first shopper. She dashed into the store about 7:40 a.m. — 20 minutes before the scheduled opening — to grab school supplies for her children.

  • Buyer sets sights on empty condo project

    The long-vacant D.R. Horton condominium project off Evergreen Parkway in Bergen Park is under contract as part of a larger deal including all of D.R. Horton’s multifamily housing complexes.

    The deal is under contract and scheduled to close in September, said Jonathan Wayne, vice president for land with D.R. Horton’s Denver division. He declined to reveal the name of the buyer while the deal is pending.

    There are 24 units in three buildings, ranging in size from 1,339 to 1,686 square feet.

  • Tanglewoods taking a hiatus

    Tanglewoods is closed ee for now

    Tanglewoods restaurant in North Evergreen has shut its doors temporarily for a wedding and a short vacation by the owners, according to voice-mail and a sign on the restaurant’s door.

    “Tanglewoods will be closed to celebrate Jeff and Sara’s wedding, and we are going to enjoy a short vacation, so to speak. See you in a couple of weeks,” says the message when you call the restaurant.

    The restaurant has been closed for about 10 days, and there isn’t any definitive word on when it will reopen.

  • Walgreens expected to open in August

    Never fear. Walgreens will be here.

    Walgreens will definitely be opening in Evergreen by the end of August, according to a company spokeswoman.

    Construction issues have delayed the original opening date, according to Carol Hively, corporate spokeswoman for Walgreens. She declined to elaborate on what those issues might be.

    Rumors circulating around Evergreen that Walgreens is backing out or that the company is having a hard time hiring workers are false, she said.

  • Dogs, owners find fun at new store

    Dogma is defined as a belief in something. Dogma Pet Supply and Dog Wash opened because of owner Craig Gulliford’s belief that a pet supply store should be an experience, not just a store.

    Dogma, near El Rancho at 29017 Hotel Way, opened in January. Gulliford said the business has a fun and happy atmosphere.

    “You automatically smile when you walk in,” he said.

    The walls are painted in bright colors, and dog beds, dog food and other dog supplies line the walls.

  • Two new cafes in Kittredge offer a place to eat early, hang late

    Two new cafs in Kittredge that opened within days of each other are adding new life to that community.

    Cup of Joe Caf, opened by former Bucksnort Saloon owner Joe Bye, is hosting its grand opening this weekend. Bear Creek Marketplace, owned by Jim Kenney, opened July 4.

    When Linda Curnes-Counter stopped at Sammy’s Tavern in Evergreen last year to celebrate a friend’s birthday, she did not expect to meet a new life partner and start a new business.

  • Sunday liquor sales come to Evergreen

    Several Evergreen liquor store owners and managers said that July 6 — the first Sunday they were allowed to sell alcohol in decades — was a good day, but said they need more time to see if the change will increase profits.

    “I would say I was favorably impressed with the very first Sunday, and there was no real marketing,” said Edward Skaff, president of Evergreen Liquors. “Most of the people were very happy that we were open on Sunday.”

  • Eatery offers great view, great food

    After three months in business, the Aspen Grill in the Lakepoint Center is continuing to go strong.

    The restaurant is in the space that formerly housed the Wine Bar on Evergreen Lake. Now it is a bar and restaurant that serves “contemporary comfort bistro fare,” said co-owner Joseph Newman. Newman, Ken Kerver and Evergreen resident John Watson are the owners.

    Newman says his motivation to own the restaurant was simply one thing: Evergreen Lake.

  • Rocky Mountain Log Furniture sets up shop in Evergreen

    When Evergreen resident Ann Verzeletti decided she wanted out of the oil business in 2004, she decided it would be a “cute, semi-retirement” occupation to own a store that sold handcrafted log furniture.

    But one shop turned into three stores plus a studio on Bryant Drive in Evergreen, along with four carpenters. Rocky Mountain Log Furniture produces as many as five beds, five dressers and six nightstands a week from handpicked, long-dead aspen trees gnawed by elk and pocked with knotholes.

  • Growing friends one landscape at a time

    When Dave Thomas, owner of Sundance Gardens and Landscaping, drives through Evergreen subdivisions such as Hiwan, he sees trees and bushes that he planted as many as 30 years ago.

    Both the trees he’s planted and the friends he’s made have grown since the company got its start back in 1978. It began as a landscaping business, and Thomas added the garden center in 1988 at the corner of Highway 74 and Meadow Drive.
