A snowstorm that began in earnest Thursday evening was still pummeling the mountain area Friday, closing schools and government offices and making travel treacherous.

Snow was expected to continue falling until Saturday morning. The slow-moving storm is accompanied by wind gusts up to 40 mph, limiting visibility and piling drifts high.

The Evergreen Park and Rec District still planned to go ahead with the Winter Festival on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Evergreen Lake, though both EPRD rec centers closed early Friday, and skating at the lake was canceled.
