  • Evergreen Jazz Fest will be on a high note in 2010

    The Evergreen Jazz Festival has become an institution, not only among the summer musical offerings in our mountain community, but in the national jazz community as well. People travel from all over the country to listen to the diverse lineup of traditional and contemporary jazz ensembles. With the event now in its ninth year, the 2010 Evergreen Jazz Festival should prove to be bigger and better than ever.

  • Arts Alive! offers eye-catching visual arts

    Last week, we took a look at the performing arts events scheduled for Evergreen’s inaugural Arts Alive! week. This week, we’ll focus on the visual arts events that make up this week-long celebration of arts and culture in our mountain community.

    The week kicks off Friday, July 16, with Evergreen’s traditional Last Friday Gallery Walk taking place two weeks early. The local galleries will be open on Friday and Saturday evenings from 4 to 7 p.m. offering refreshments and a chance to peruse all of their latest artwork.

  • 10 days of events will bring Evergreen arts scene to life

    The arts are alive in Evergreen, and this year 10 consecutive days of events will prominently showcase the town’s performing and visual talents.

    Arts Alive! Evergreen was the spearheaded by Steve Sumner, executive director of the Center for the Arts, and the Evergreen Arts and Cultural Alliance, a group of volunteers who wanted to showcase the arts and culture of our mountain community in a week-long celebration.

    Evergreen is filled with beauty at every turn — the shimmering waters of Evergreen Lake, blowing wild grasses at Elk Meadow and views of Mount Evans looming in the background. To make our mountain community even more beautiful, Evergreen is brimming with art at every turn. Thanks to Art for the Mountain Community, Evergreen is an ever-changing canvas of public art that invites us to view, engage or simply go about our days in a more beautiful and thoughtful place.

  • Evergreen artists join forces in G-town co-op

    A new multimedia co-op art gallery with close ties to the Evergreen art scene opened June 5 on the main street in Georgetown, with 60 mountain-area artists working in virtually every conceivable medium from jewelry to quilts.

    The Colorado Mountain Art Gallery, a nonprofit cooperative founded by the Center for the Arts Evergreen, opened its doors on Saturday, May 29, at 406 Sixth St., across the street from the historic Hotel de Paris.

    The grand opening is Saturday and Sunday, June 26 and 27. There will be refreshments and artists on hand to talk about their work.

  • Garcia creates daily diary of brushstrokes and images

    Evergreen artist Ted Garcia’s latest collection of work is like a painted diary of his life in 2009. Of course, all art is personal for the artist creating it, but in Garcia’s latest show, Plein Air 365, the viewer gets a glimpse at the sunsets, creatures and places that touched Garcia’s soul last year.

    On New Year’s Eve 2008, Garcia stood in a field in Norman, Okla., painting the last sunset of the year. It was at this moment when the idea for his 2009 project, Plein Air 365, struck.

  • Setting the stage for the future

    It’s bigger, it’s better, and it will be ready for a standing ovation by the end of April.

    StageDoor Theatre will soon move down three doors from its cramped 2,600-square-foot space to a 5,000-square-foot spacious theater at the Aspen Park Village Shopping Center.

    “This is a family-theater-living-room that’s open to the public,” accompanist Debra Christensen said.

    The previous theater had 80 seats; the new venue has 125.

  • ‘Godspell, Jr.’ keeps the faith

    If Matthew decided to write his Gospel on sheet music with tight harmonies and pop vocals, it would sound a lot like “Godspell, Jr.” If this well-known disciple and the rest of the biblical cast of characters decided to bring the stories to the stage, they would come to life much like the Evergreen Children’s Chorale’s upcoming performances of this award-winning musical designed especially for kids.

  • EAA spring show draws art from far and wide

    The Evergreen Artists Association is a local member organization made up of more than 100 artists from throughout the mountain area. Over the last 50 years, the association has worked to provide a forum for artists to gather, learn from one another and share their work. This year, the EAA is working to broaden its reach, and these efforts are reflected in the turnout for its spring show opening on April 23.

  • Elk Meadow Open Space inspires artist Warren

    Ask anyone who lives in Evergreen — or drives through, for that matter — our beloved Elk Meadow Open Space Park can make quite an impression. Arvada-based artist Eldon Warren can attest to this. He was recently commissioned to create an oil painting of the aging barn that sits at the north end of the park. This painting led Warren to create a new series of Elk Meadow paintings, and his series will be on display beginning April 30 at Stoneheart Gallery in Evergreen.
