Winter Festival to feature competitive fun for amateurs, pros and youngsters

The second annual Winter Festival at Evergreen Lake on Saturday, Feb. 9, promises to be a day of competitive fun and challenges for amateur and pro skiers, snowboarders, mountain bikers and ice fishermen.

The event, produced by Never Summer Industries and the Evergreen Park and Recreation District, offers people of all ages and skill levels opportunities to compete at the lake from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

"It's very exciting," said Evergreen resident Pam Lindquist, the festival coordinator. "We are showcasing Evergreen, our town, and the ability to do things here all year long."

Along with sporting events, the festival features a snowman walk competition, snow castle play area, snow slide, tractor-pulled sleigh rides, dogsled rides, music, food and drink.

The Snowflake Circus will perform at the festival, which closes with a nighttime fireworks display over Evergreen Lake.

Following is a roundup of the day's events:

Ice bike race

The festival's ice bike race is a one-of-a-kind mountain competition on trails carved across Evergreen Lake that is expected to attract riders from across Colorado and beyond. Studded tires and spiked shoes are highly recommended for riders taking on the multi-lap course, which will include both land and ice obstacles that Evergreen Bicycle Outfitters is placing on the lake.

Yeti Cycles is providing prizes to the top three finishers in in the novice and advanced divisions, and Twenty-2 Cycles will have its fat bikes available for test-riding.

Entry includes two complimentary general admission tickets to the Winter Festival.

Ski and Snowboard Rail Jam

The annual Ski and Snowboard Rail Jam competition features amateurs during the

day and experts at night competing on ramps and rails on the hill above Evergreen Lake.

The amateur rail jam competition, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., combines rail jam and slope-style formats in four divisions: snowboarder male and snowboarder female; and skier male and

skier female. The amateur competition offers advancement to finals for first place and first-, second- and third-place prizes in each division.

The application fee is $15 and includes two complimentary general admission tickets to Winter Festival.

The open/pro rail jam competition takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. with combined rail jam and slope-style formats in four Divisions: snowboarder male and snowboarder female; skier male and skier female.

A cash prize will be given to first-place winners in each division. The North Face is also providing prizes for first-, second- and third-place winners in each division

Tightline ice-fishing derby

Tightline Outdoors and Blue Quill Angler are sponsoring a professional-quality ice fishing tournament at the festival that will offer cash prizes up to $750. The event is limited to 100 anglers age 16 and over, followed by a kids' competition.

The three-hour derby will be held on a designated area on the lake, with the biggest

trout by weight winning the top prize. Holes will already be drilled, and each angler

can weigh in three fish throughout the derby. Registration is $35. The first 25 people to sign up receive a custom ice fishing jig. 

The pro derby runs from 8 to 11 a.m. The kids' fishing derby will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. and has a $5 entry fee.

General admission tickets for the Winter Festival are $10 for people ages 13 and older. Children 12 and younger will be admitted free. 

A limited number of VIP tickets are also available for the festival, offering a prime view of the pro rail jam competition and fireworks, as well as a buffet dinner, beer, wine and non-alcoholic beverages. 

VIP tickets are priced at $50 for adults and $12.50 for kids and can be purchased at evergreenwinterfestival.com/about/buytickets.
