Colorful Evergreen Elks Lodge entry is top winner in Rodeo Parade

By Sandy Barnes

“That is my favorite,” proclaimed 4-year-old Liam Satterfield as he watched Mountain Drain’s purple-hued float make its way into downtown Evergreen on Saturday.

As unofficial Rodeo Parade master, Liam was providing a running commentary on the event with its circus theme.

A bevy of floats with carnival decorations and clowns passed by the crowd, which was filled with enthralled youngsters like Liam — and Katie and Cameron Stewart, who came to the parade with their grandmother Patricia Stewart.

As bubbles floated into the breezy air on the sunny morning, the Evergreen High School Poms kicked up their heels for the parade audience, and the high school band played traditional circus music.

Women wearing large hot-dog hats sat on the Evergreen Animal Protective League float. Cuts and Stuff hair salon created a huge box of popcorn and cotton candy for its float, which was decorated with sparkly streamers.

“Evergreen: the greatest place to live!” shouted a clown on the Evergreen Elks Club entry in the parade.

Besides a variety of horses ridden by rodeo royalty, other animals got into the act. A large white goose perched on the Jeffco 4-H Club entry squawked at the crowd, while a pair of lambs ambled beside the float.

The driver of a vintage Model-T car honked choruses of “hooga, hooga” to the parade crowd.

Those who came to the event received lots of candy — and the traditional dousing of water from Evergreen Fire/Rescue trucks that rolled down the street to applause from spectators.

As the parade entries came to the end of the course, three judges dressed in clown outfits gave them close looks. Kathy Flaherty, aka Giggles, Bart Corfee as Bonzo, and Sandy Swan, who nicknamed herself “Swannie,” selected the winning floats.

Flaherty is chairperson of hospitality for Evergreen Newcomers and Neighbors. She is also a graphic designer and vice president for marketing at Conexxis Inc., a software development company she founded with her husband, Will. Flaherty is a co-founder of the Annie Brings Joy Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports families dealing with loved ones suffering from mental illness.

Corfee, owner of Corfee and Associates, is a financial adviser specializing in portfolio asset management. He spends much of his free time dedicated community service as a member of the Mountain Foothills Rotary Club. He also is a past president of the Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department and of the Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce.

Swan, owner of Swan Realtor Group of Coldwell Banker, has been in real estate for more than 14 years and is a licensed broker in Colorado and Florida.  She began her career as an educator, teaching at the University of Minnesota and the University of Hawaii. When not guiding her real estate team, Swan can be found riding horses in parades, hiking through the Colorado Rockies and working as a chairperson for the Mounsey Legacy Project in Evergreen.
