WESTMINSTER — Sam Theil had his fair share of issues at Hyland Hills Golf Course on Sept. 10. Be it the recently aerated greens that had been sanded down just the day before or the Par-5 holes on the Par-72 course, the Evergreen golfer ran into some issues.
Nevertheless, he was still able to overcome all of that to shoot a 9-over 81 in leading Evergreen to a fifth-place finish in the 4A Jeffco League regular-season finale. He was one of four Evergreen golfers to shoot in the mid to low 80s, followed by Adam Zuckerman and Luke Schultz each firing an 82 and Kyle Peterson shooting an 85.
“I thought it went well. I had the bad holes and the good holes. Overall, it ended up OK,” Theil said.
It could’ve been even better.
Theil birdied his first hole and was at 1-under after five holes, but he couldn’t sustain that early momentum. A lot of that had to do with the course’s longer holes.
“I struggled on the Par-5s. I just myself in trouble on those holes,” Theil said. “I felt really comfortable on the short and medium Par 4s.”
Thiel finished 14 shots back of top medalist John Ahern of D’Evelyn, who fired a 68. Spencer Sheets of Valor Christian came in second with a 71, followed by Sam Phillips of D’Evelyn and Valor Christian’s Blake Patterson and John Seiple, who each shot a 75.
D’Evelyn and Valor Christian tied for the top team honor with a 298 each. Green Mountain and Summit tied for third with a 329, one shot ahead of the Cougars.
