Evergreen senior captures annual Sanders Invite as Lady Cougars win team title; Boys team comes in 2nd

LITTLETON — It was starting to become a regular occurrence. Three times this season, Sammy Skold placed third – at the season-opening Cheyenne Mountain Stampede, the Joe Vigil Open and the Liberty Bell. Her last win seemed like a distant memory.
But she doesn’t have to worry about that any longer. Skold, who last won at the 2011 Liberty Bell, captured the annual Dave Sanders Invitational at Clement Park on Sept. 28 in a time of 19 minutes, 52 seconds.
“Having a first-place finish feels amazing right now, but I have to tell you that second mile mentally is probably the hardest thing I’ve gone through in a while,” Skold said. “It gets so boring back there.”
But having the field behind her, in particular, Abrah Matterson of Middle Park, who finished five seconds back, was all the motivation the Evergreen senior needed.
Skold, who placed fourth in the 4A Jeffco League championships and second at regionals last season, is hopeful that she’ll peak when it matters most in 2012.
“Last year, I peaked way too early. I peaked at Liberty Bell,” Skold said. “This year, I’m collaborating with my coaches a lot more, racing a lot smarter. Hopefully, I’ll peak at state and have that performance I’ve been waiting for.”
Skold was joined in the Top 10 by teammate Caitlin Schmitt, who came in sixth in 20:12. Evergreen’s girls team finished with 40 points, easily outdistancing second-place Holy Family though the Lady Tigers had two runners in the Top 5.
In the boys race, Jackson Sayler slipped into a seventh-place finish in 17:11. He just clipped Centaurus’ Sam Patzer at the finish line.
“I was out there mainly to pace my fellow teammate Sam (Sahli) and do what I could at the end of the race,” Sayler said. “I think I achieved my goals for this race.”
Sahli finished ninth in 17:18.
Evergreen’s boys came in second to Centaurus with 79 points. The Warriors won with 37 points, led by three Top 8 finishes. Rival Conifer, led by Kevin Johnson’s 10th-place run in 17:20, came in third with 84 points.
