Jeffco school board member Paula Noonan was arrested during a traffic stop Jan. 8 when Denver police officers became aware of an outstanding warrant from a 2011 traffic ticket.

Noonan wrote in a letter to the editor of the Courier that in 2011 she was ticketed for not having proof of insurance when she was pulled over. Noonan was given a court date, which she said she missed.

Noonan apologized publicly at the school board’s meeting Thursday evening.

“I made a personal mistake, and I believe that … I need to be forthcoming about it,” she said. “I ask for forgiveness and grace.”

Noonan’s letter to the editor is published on the Opinion page in this edition of the Courier.

On Jan. 8 of this year, Noonan was pulled over about 11:30 a.m. at Third Avenue and Broadway in Denver for having expired license plates, according to Denver police reports. After she was stopped, officers discovered the warrant and arrested her. The plates had expired the previous month, Noonan said.

“At that point I knew I had made a very big mistake,” Noonan said at Thursday's meeting.

Noonan said she has renewed her license plates and paid her fine.

School board President Lesley Dahlkemper said Noonan let the district know about the ticket at a meeting on Jan. 14.

“I appreciate that Dr. Noonan informed us about the arrest and that she apologized for it,” Dahlkemper said. “I think the most important piece is that she’s working with the courts to resolve this immediately.”

Noonan represents District 5, which includes Lakewood and part of Morrison. She was elected to the board in November 2009.
