Rotary clubs raise funds for statue at veterans walk

Five area Rotary clubs have contributed funds for a statue to be placed at the Veterans Commemorative Walk in Buchanan Park.

During a breakfast meeting of the clubs at Evergreen Country Day School last Friday, Rotarians presented an $8,000 check to American Legion Post 2001 in Evergreen. Half of the amount was raised by the Evergreen, Mountain Foothills, Conifer, Clear Creek and Peak-to-Peak clubs. The remainder of the contribution was in the form of a Rotary Foundation grant.

“This is a wonderful thing,” Evergreen Rotary Club member Joan Spalding said during the presentation.

The current concept for the statue design is that of a Vietnam-era solider kneeling and holding a rifle. The total cost of the bronze statue is estimated at $16,000, most of which has been raised by the Rotary Club.

“We’re in the process of getting it approved. Then we’ll pick an artist,” said Legionnaire Dave Rommelmann.

Evergreen Park and Recreation District staff and board members will need to review the plan for the statue before it can be placed in the park.

“The park district would have to approve the design,” said Scott Robson, EPRD executive director.

The design that is now being presented is different than the original concept, Robson added.

“For me, this is a tough piece,” he said. “So much is still premature.”

The agreement with the American Legion for the commemorative walk does specifically say that there will be no war icons at the memorial, Robson added.

Some of those who are involved in the project are concerned about beginning the project before the April 30, 2013, deadline for using the grant funds.

The commemorative walk currently features a rock wall with flags and plaques and a pathway with pavers that are inscribed with names of veterans. Those interested in purchasing a paver may visit the website at  HYPERLINK "http://www.legionpost2001.org" www.legionpost2001.org.
