Drain safety covers are complete on both

The Buchanan Rec Center pool is expected to be closed longer than usual for annual maintenance as work continues to replace loose tiles around the pool deck.

The new opening date is tentatively set for Sept. 7. It was closed on Aug. 17.

The Wulf Rec Center pool reopened at 5:45 a.m. Aug. 21.

Both pools are now equipped with drain covers as required by the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act of 2007.

The law was passed by Congress and signed by President Bush on Dec. 19, 2007. It is designed to prevent the hidden hazard of drain entrapments in pools and spas after the 7-year-old granddaughter of former secretary of state James Baker was killed in 2002 in an accident in a hot tub.

Under the law, all public pools and spas must have compliant drain covers installed and a second anti-entrapment system when there is only a single main drain.

At Wulf Rec Center, the walls were painted and the old pumps were rebuilt. New storage has been built and new lane lines painted.

“The public will really notice how much brighter everything will look. The water will be warmer, and it will feel like a newer facility,” said John Skeel, executive director of the park district.

The work on the weight room remodeling project at Wulf began Aug. 24 and is expected to continue for nine weeks.
