An Evergreen pedestrian was killed Monday evening while trying to cross Evergreen Parkway at Brookline Road.

James Steele, 65, was fatally struck by a northbound vehicle about 7:30 p.m. Dec. 17 as he crossed the busy highway in the direction of Hiwan Country Club. According to a Colorado State Patrol report, Steele walked into the path a 1990 Mazda MX-6 driven by Conifer resident Nathan Meader, 23, who sustained minor injuries in the accident. Steele was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Evergreen Fire/Rescue spokesman Einar Jensen, Steele was traveling between an RTD bus stop and Brookline. Northbound traffic was temporarily shut down following the crash.

No charges have been filed, and authorities do not suspect either drugs or alcohol as contributing factors. The incident remains under investigation.
