Parents and community members who wish to speak during the public-comment portion of Jeffco school board meetings now must sign up online.

The change comes after the board’s Nov. 21 meeting, when newly elected board members Ken Witt, Julie Williams and John Newkirk announced their desire for the board and its meetings to be more accessible to parents.

It’s the latest in a series of changes, as meeting times have been moved from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., and meeting locations have been moved to different high schools to increase community engagement.

Board members also expressed an interest in streaming meetings online.

The next school board meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12 at Lakewood High School.

Registering for public comment

Registering in advance online is now the only way for residents to be permitted to speak during public comment. A sign-up list will no longer be provided at meetings.

Online registration will be offered the Sunday before a scheduled meeting and will close at 3 p.m. the day of the meeting. School board meetings are held on Thursdays.

Residents without computer access may still sign up by visiting district headquarters at 1829 Denver West Drive, Building 27, in Golden. Jeffco Schools will provide a computer to sign up, and residents can visit until 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday and until 3 p.m. on the Thursday of a meeting.

The online sign up site is www.surveymonkey.com/s/board_ed_registration.

The next Jeffco Board of Education meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Lakewood High School, 9700 W. Eighth Ave.
