GOLDEN - In the end, Sierra's speed was able to overcome Evergreen's height as the second-seeded Sallions outscored the No. 3 Cougars 8-2 in the game's final three minutes to win the Tracy Hill Region's Sweet 16 game March 7 at Golden High School.
Evergreen, which had its eight-game win streak ended, led by four poitns after the first quarter and twice led by as many as 10 points in the second quarter. Sierra, though, never faltered and answered Evergreen's charge each time.
Trailing by five at halfitme and eight early in the third quarter, Sierra went on a 7-0 run that changed the game's momentum. They briefly took the lead late in the quarter before Evergreen jumped back in front by a point to start the fourth quarter.
A steal and layup by Megan Hodson gave the Cougars (16-9) a 43-40 lead with 2:58 to play. But, Evergreen wouldn't score again until a layup by Tricia Oakes at the buzzer. Sierra put the game away, hitting 5-of-6 shots from the free-throw line.
Oakes led Evergreen with 22 points. Kimmy Baroch had 10 points, all in the first half.
Sierra takes on top-seeded Golden March 8 at 1 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Final Four.
