Although Evergreen High School’s new principal will be traveling a long way to take the position this fall, it’s really more like coming home.
Ryan Alsup, who was introduced to the EHS faculty last Thursday, has been the principal at Juneau-Douglas High School in Alaska for the last three years.
While that’s a long trip to make to get to Evergreen, Alsup actually grew up outside Larkspur, graduated from Douglas County schools, taught social studies, and was an administrative dean and assistant principal there.
“It’s time for us to come back home,” Alsup told the faculty. Alsup’s wife is a school counselor, and his daughters are in seventh and third grade.
Alsup is replacing Matt Walsh, who has been EHS’s principal for five years. Walsh has taken a position at the district level in the new School Innovation and Effectiveness Division.
Faculty members were told by their colleagues who served on the selection committee that the decision was unanimous for Alsup, and they believed he would be a good fit for the school.
Dr. Deb O’Neill, the area’s executive director for Jeffco Schools, said she believed the committee did a good job going through the hiring process.
“We’ve got the best of the best,” she said. “(He was) selected from a strong and deep candidate pool.”
Alsup has returned to Juneau to finish out the school year, but then he will be back in Evergreen to look for a home and prepare for the new school year.
“I cannot wait to meet all of you,” Alsup told the faculty. “I’m an open door. It will be a fantastic fit.”
