Throughout the world, the summer solstice is marked with pomp and circumstance. In France, midsummer brings the Feast of St. John, which is celebrated with the lighting of bonfires; in Austria a parade of ships progresses down the Danube River; and in England the summer solstice prompted William Shakespeare to write “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Regardless of one’s celebratory preference, the summer solstice, with its promise of the most daylight hours, gives many an excuse for nighttime revelry.
