Madrigal Faire is Saturday at EHS

Many holiday traditions in the U.S. are tinged with a taste of Merry Ole’ England. Families head to the theater to have their holiday spirits renewed by Dickens’ grumpy yet lovable Ebeneezer Scrooge. Singers gather round doorsteps to serenade neighbors with candlelight carols. What better way to ring in the holidays than immersing yourself in the grand tradition of King Henry’s Renaissance court at the 24th annual Madrigal Marketplace and Faire presented by the Evergreen High School Performing Arts Department.
On Saturday, Dec. 4, the halls of Evergreen High will be transformed into a Madrigal Marketplace. More than 150 students from the choral and instrumental music departments will don period costumes and entertain visitors with the fanfares, dances and holiday tunes of medieval times.
2010 marks the second year for the new Madrigal Marketplace-style of this longstanding annual event. Visitors will be greeted by strolling minstrels while they enjoy a marketplace filled with handmade items, which make great holiday gifts and a carnival complete with games, crafts for children and the EHS book nook, where  little ones can create holiday memories.
Ticket buyers can take advantage of two start times for the Madrigal Faire, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. After satiating holiday hunger and thirst with a complimentary beverage and food available for purchase at the Faire, visitors will be treated to the Madrigal Concert. Seating times for the concert will depend upon visitors’ admission time to the Faire.  The concert will feature students from the EHS choirs, chorale groups, band and orchestra.
“The performances are going to have a jester and the town crier. Each year, the seniors write a top-secret skit that they perform in the Madrigal style. No one knows the ending until the day of the Faire. I hear it’s going to be very funny this year,” says Laurie Romberg, Evergreen High parent and volunteer.
The Madrigal Marketplace has become a highly anticipated holiday tradition that highlights the high caliber of student performance at Evergreen High School.
“We love that the community has a chance to enjoy the kids performing,” says Romberg.
