Painting is like a game of chess, because there are a lot of steps before you get to the end, the Wilmot Elementary School artist-in-residence told fourth-graders recently.
Some steps are simple, but some are complex, and if you pay attention, the painting will tell you what it needs, painter Virginia Unseld told them.
“Listen to your painting. It will give you information,” she said, as she demonstrated how to paint yellow-leaved aspens with a backdrop of blue Colorado sky and winter brown grass.
