The Inter-Canyon Fire Protection District is installing electronic locks at all four of the district’s stations to increase security.
“Each (Inter-Canyon) member will be assigned a key and will have to carry it with them,” said Dan Hatlestad, firefighter and paramedic with Inter-Canyon.
The heightened security comes in the wake of theft and embezzlement charges against former fire chief David MacBean. MacBean faces six felony counts in connection with the theft of $643,000 from Inter-Canyon over a three-year period. His arraignment is Jan. 27.
Inter-Canyon staff and board members will have to use a key card to access the district’s stations. The new system will track who uses a door and when.
“We will know who’s in our fire stations and when,” Hatlestad said. “It will give us greater control over each of our fire stations.”
The project is costing Inter-Canyon approximately $15,000 for 20 electronic locks among the district’s four stations.
“We have community groups which use our stations on a very routine basis,” Hatlestad said. “So the leader of each of those groups will be assigned a key, and they will be responsible for any access using that key.”
Cards will also be issued to troopers from the Colorado State Patrol and Jeffco sheriff’s deputies who routinely visit Inter-Canyon stations for phone calls and to use the facilities, Hatlestad said.
“UPS (drivers will get a card) because they’re frequently delivering materials, parts, medical supplies to our station,” Hatlestad said.
The locks are manufactured by Trilogy Locks. Hatlestad said the increased security isn't because of any past incidents or items stolen.
"We haven't had any issues (at our stations)," Hatlestad said, adding that the district just wants a better understanding of who is in its stations and when.
Hatlestad said district employees will install the locks, and they should be operational this week.
