The Evergreen Ice Melt Barrel was stationed at its lonely outpost on Evergreen Lake for the third year at 10 a.m. Jan. 1.

Sponsored by the Mountain/Foothills Rotary Club, the barrel is monitored until it falls in the drink, signaling the approach of spring. The public is invited to bet on when the barrel goes for a swim. The winner gets $1,000. Second place is $400. Proceeds go to the Evergreen park district’s special needs program (60 percent), DriveSmart (20 percent) and the Rotary Foundation.

Last year’s barrel-melt netted $2,500. Tickets go on sale at the end of January at Caffé di Lucca, EPRD recreation centers and through Rotary members. Last year’s barrel started floating in March, and the year before it lasted until April.

For tickets, call Gerry Lautigar at 303-886-6463. Tickets are $3 or two for $5.
