Events follow Mountain Bowl this Friday

The 2013 Evergreen High School homecoming week starts some new traditions while forgoing this year’s parade.

It’s been a whirlwind to get homecoming organized because it comes only a month after school started, said senior Maggie May, co-president of the school’s Student Senate along with Will Moss.

The theme this year is Coastal Craze, and the Student Senate wanted to amp up participation among students and the community.

This year, homecoming week follows the Mountain Bowl, when EHS plays Conifer High in Evergreen at 7 p.m. this Friday. May says the Student Senate hopes to further boost the school spirit that the Mountain Bowl generates.

At 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, the boys will play a “peach-fuzz volleyball game” in the gymnasium, and on Wednesday, Sept. 25, the girls will play a “powder-puff football game” at 7:30 p.m. on the football field.

Spirit days this year feature some creativity: America Day on Monday; Generation Flip Day on Tuesday, when students dress as teachers, babies or senior citizens while teachers dress as students; Ugly Sweater Day on Wednesday; tourist at a Hawaiian luau day on Thursday; and class colors day on Friday, when freshmen wear white, sophomores black, juniors red, and seniors blue and gold.

The one thing missing this year is a homecoming parade. The Student Senate had wanted to have the parade on Buffalo Park Road, with plans to get the students at neighboring Wilmot Elementary involved. However, Friday, Sept. 27, is an early-release day for Wilmot, so the parade was scrapped.

There are a host of fall sports games that week, including varsity boys soccer at Lakewood Memorial Field and volleyball at EHS on Sept. 24, softball and gymnastics, both at EHS on Sept. 26, and the varsity football game against Arvada High School at 7 p.m. Sept. 27 on the EHS football field.

The annual school carnival is Friday afternoon, and the homecoming dance is at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in the EHS gymnasium.
