Holland takes 12th at state in backstroke

LOVELAND — Freshman Ben Holland, an Evergreen High student, placed 12th in the 100 backstroke, while Conifer’s boys swimming team had three top-15 finishes in relays at the 4A state championship May 22 at the Mountain Viee Aquatic Center.

The 400 freestyle squad finished ninth, the 200 medley team took 10th, and the 200 freestyle was 15th.

Conifer’s Sawyer Franz swam to a pair of top-five finishes. First, Franz, a student at Platte Canyon High School, took third in the 200 individual medley in a time of 1 minute, 56.09 seconds. Then, Franz came back and took fourth in the 500 freestyle in 4:43.83. Patrick Scally of Cheyenne Mountain won in 4:35.53.

Franz’s efforts led the Lobos, as a team, to 72 points and a 12th-place finish. Lewis-Palmer won its second straight team championship with 408 points.
