GOLDEN — Measuring oneself against a bunch of Demons can be a risky proposition.

The Cougars, however, were proud of the comparisons.

As the pins were dropping en masse, Evergreen hung with Golden until the final two matches last Thursday before going down 45-34 to one of the Class 4A Jefferson County League’s traditional powers.

“We did a lot better than I personally expected,” said Evergreen’s 160-pounder, Chad Foutch. “I’ve never beaten Golden in my four years, but we came down within two matches. It’s been a blowout the last two years. The team is definitely getting better.”

Individually speaking, very little was close as the winners dominated. The teams combined for eight pins, one technical fall, two major decisions and three forfeits.

The dual, which started at the 152-pound weight class, saw the Demons leading 30-28 with four weights remaining. Golden, however, would win three of them to seal the victory.

The Cougars got pinfall victories from Nathan Phipps (103 pounds), Matt Marovich (140), and Rory Finnegan (189). Cody Martinez (125) won via forfeit and Foutch worked his way to a 20-6 major decision, just missing a technical fall.
