An independent foundation is making scholarship money available for people in need to pay for recreation passes, fitness classes and children’s day camp, beginning with the summer season.
Application forms, the summer class schedule and the summer day camps guide is available at www.evergreenrecreation.com. At the bottom of the home page, click on “choose form” for Foundation Scholarship Program Request.
The program is the longtime dream of Kit Darrow, a member of the park district board of directors and president of the Evergreen Recreation and Park Foundation since 2006.
“When people are facing job loss and a difficult time, we believe fitness and wellness activities can do a lot to improve morale and well-being,” Darrow said.
Ellen Stephan, the new park district recreation manager, will oversee the distribution of grants.
“The program could not have happened without Ellen’s help,” Darrow said.
Stephan administered a large scholarship program when she worked for the Foothills Park and Recreation District.
District staff will select scholarship recipients on the basis of need. Applicants can choose a three-month pass, day camp for a child or even a dance or yoga class. There is enough money available to accommodate 20 to 30 participants.
Individuals can make contributions to the program at www.evergreenparks.org.
The Evergreen Recreation and Park Foundation was revived in 2006 to enhance recreation department operations without having to go to the taxpayers for a mill levy increase. So far, about $100,000 has been raised for projects, including $33,500 in 2009 for the improvement of the Bergen Elementary field.
