A broken natural gas line forced the evacuation of several Bergen Park homes on Tuesday morning and prompted a temporary lockdown at Bergen Valley Elementary School.
According to Einar Jensen, spokesman for Evergreen Fire/Rescue, a private contractor working on Black Eagle Drive severed the pipe about 10 a.m. At least 20 firefighters and several sheriff’s deputies responded, and residents living near the site were moved a safe distance away until the leak could be repaired.
