Former Jeffco Sheriff Russ Cook was found dead in his home Nov. 21.

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office was asked to do a welfare check on Cook, who apparently had not been seen in several days, said Jim Shires, spokesman for the sheriff's office. A deputy found Cook dead on the floor.

There were no apparent signs of foul play, and the Jefferson County coroner's office is investigating, Shires said.

Cook, 59, was elected sheriff in 2002. He served from January 2003 to July 2003, when he was forced to resign by a command staff that lost confidence in him. Cook was battling an alcohol addiction at the time. Undersheriff Ted Mink took over, and remains sheriff to this day.

Previous to his time as sheriff, Cook had been chief of the Golden Police Department.

Earlier this year the former sheriff was jailed on charges of domestic violence after he was accused of stalking a former girlfriend.
