A family living on Armadillo Trail off Highway 73 escaped a house fire on Friday evening that severely damaged their home.
Part of the roof collapsed, according to Evergreen Fire/Rescue spokesman Doug Saba, so firefighters switched to defensive mode, which means they worked only from the outside to keep the flames from spreading further or to nearby trees.
“It’s so dry out there right now,” Saba said, “that a house fire can turn into a forest fire very quickly.”
