The Evergreen Rotary Club presented a check for $500 on Friday to John Zabawa, director of the Seniors’ Resource Center in Evergreen.
Rotarian Jane Weinberger, who championed the grant through the Evergreen Rotary Foundation, presented the check at the club’s weekly meeting at El Rancho and noted that the center is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. She said that members of the Evergreen Rotary Club, chartered the same year, have been volunteering at the center each year since.
Zabawa, also a Rotarian, thanked the club’s members for the check and for their support of the center over the years and promised to put the money “to good use.”
In previous weeks, the club also presented checks for $750 and $1,200, respectively, to the Higher Ground youth coffee house and the Mountain Resource Center in Conifer.
Rotarian Larry Caine, chairman of the club’s community service committee, said the money gifts are among dozens presented by the club every year to various organizations in the community and financed by proceeds from the club’s annual Wines in the Woods event, which is Oct. 25 at the Pines in Genesee. Tickets are $60, of which half is tax-deductible.
Since the wine event’s start eight years ago, Caine said, the club has given away a total of $154,080 in grants “that stayed right here in the community for worthy projects.”
Tickets for this year’s event are available at www.winesinthewoods.com or at Rising Graphics, 27985 Meadow Drive in Evergreen.
