Evergreen Rodeo celebrates Year of the Horse

-A A +A

Coors chairman will be grand marshal

By Sandy Barnes

The Year of the Horse will be celebrated at this year's Evergreen Rodeo. Rodeo organizers decided to incorporate a Western style version of the Chinese year into the 49th annual rodeo on June 14 and 15, said Sharon Mowry, advertising and sponsorship coordinator for the event.

The theme for 2014 encompasses “anything that has to do with a horse,” said Mowry.

Pete Coors, chairman of Miller Coors in Golden, will be the grand marshal of the rodeo parade that kicks off the Father's Day weekend of events. Coors will also be serving his company's beer at the El Pinal Rodeo Grounds from noon to 1 p.m .on Saturday.

The rodeo parade beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday will feature more than 100 floats, marching bands, carriages, antique cars and of course, horses. The event will follow the traditional route from Evergreen Lake through the downtown area.

Judges will award first, second and third place prizes to the winning floats, plus a prize for the biggest crowd pleaser.

Before the parade, Blue Spruce Kiwanis is offering a pancake breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. at the downtown parking lot in Evergreen. Cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children.

At 9 a.m. the Main Street celebration begins in downtown Evergreen with bucking bull rides, pony rides for the kids, square dancing demos, and music by The Original Cow Boy Band.

The road through downtown Evergreen will be closed from 9:30 a.m. until the last float has made its way through the parade route. On-street parking downtown will not be available until after the parade ends.
On Saturday, gates open at noon for the rodeo performance at 2 p.m at the El Pinal Rodeo Arena at the intersection of Hwy. 74 and Stagecoach Road. The Sunday rodeo performance is also at 2 p.m. Mutton Bustin' will be held before and during the rodeo performances.

At this year's rodeo, there is an expanded vendor area in which rodeo attendees can visit and shop, Mowry said.

Tickets for the rodeo are $16 for adults and $8 for children ages 6 to 12. They can be purchased online or at the parade. All rodeo seating is general admission. No pets or coolers are permitted at the event.

Cowboy church service

On Sunday morning a cowboy service will be held at 9:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Evergreen. Local entertainers Mike and Ann Moore will sing and yodel, and Chelain Stocker will play the fiddle with members of the UMC Cowboy Band. Cowboy poetry, cowboy artwork by local artist Roger Ambrosier and a sermon by the Rev. Russell Fletcher will be other highlights of the service. Everyone is invited to a chuck wagon lunch after the service, with lunch donations going to support the church's youth mission trip to Alaska.

The church is across from Safeway at 3757 S. Ponderosa Dr.

There is no rodeo parking permitted at the former Alberton's on Stagecoach Road this year. For more information on the rodeo, parking and shuttles, and to purchase tickets, visit  www.evergreenrodeo.com.
