With March Madness now officially over, the calendar says we must spring forward.
But, before we dive head-first into baseball season, let’s take a final look back at the prep basketball season.
While no team in our coverage area won a state title, there were plenty of highlights along the way:
• Conifer’s girls basketball won 19 straight games before falling in the Sweet 16 round of the Class 4A state tournament. The Jefferson County League champions established themselves as one of the top teams in the state and with its entire core of players returning next year, the sky is the limit for the Lobos, who are led by dynamic guards Alison Gorrell and Cara Walderman.
• Chatfield had perhaps the best boys-girls combination of teams this season. The boys reached the Sweet 16 and the girls surprised many by nearly winning the 5A Jefferson County League title and advancing to the second round of the state tournament. The boys return a solid nucleus next year, and the girls will be aided by the return of junior, Chrissy Armstrong.
• Dakota Ridge’s Janelle Baal perhaps was the most important player on any of the area teams this season. Without Baal, it’s safe to say the Eagles wouldn’t have won their sixth straight Jeffco League title. Whenever a big shot needed to be made, Baal was there. Her tough man-to-man defense also helped swing the tide in more than one contest.
Just as we did for football, myself and staff writer Brian Forbes put our heads together - along with input from local coaches - and selected our first-ever Evergreen Newspapers all-area basketball teams.
Schools included in the coverage areas are: Chatfield, Columbine, Dakota Ridge, Front Range Christian, Clear Creek, Evergreen, Conifer and Platte Canyon.
I hope you like the teams we’ve put together. Send feedback to firstname.lastname@example.org.
